Vet Q&A with Charlotte

Why did you become a vet?
I had no pets for the first 12 years of my life due to a sibling’s allergies which triggered a rebellious love of all things fluffy! I spent all my spare time working in rescue centres, petting farms and the local veterinary practice so becoming a vet was the ultimate dream. It was a hard journey to get here and it can be a stressful profession but the joy of supporting owners and their pets makes it all worthwhile.

Tell us about your own pets.
I currently have two rescue cats – Jess and Schmidt that were dumped at work on my first ever day of practice in 2012. They were two runty, yet adorable 5 week old kittens and have been my best buddies ever since!

Why do you want to help pets with end of life care?
End of life is an incredibly difficult time for everyone involved but it is also a privilege and very special. For this reason it deserves time, sensitivity and consideration for the pet and their family. I have always valued having the time to be there for owners when they need it most.

Do you have any experience of your own pet loss?
I have lost a family cat and many pet rats over the years but the hardest was a puppy that I hand reared in India when I was there for a year before vet school. He went everywhere with me and thrived by my side until he was about 4 months old when he sadly became very ill with a disease that we have thankfully eradicated from the UK thanks to vaccinations. I was heartbroken. The vets there put him to sleep in my arms and I think back to this euthansia journey every time I meet people going through the same thing. The best advice anyone gave me at the time was that I’d know when it was the right time, they were right.

Please tell us about an animal or pet that has been special in your life and why.
My first pet was a stray cat called Monty that followed my brother home on a newspaper round in the snow! She lived in the greenhouse whilst my parents decided what to do. On the third day that they found me sleeping there in the cold with her they gave in and she became our pet! We never found her owner or knew what her story was. She was a shy cat but was by my side for every milestone as I grew up for 18 years.

Do you have any interests in your free time?
My husband and I love travelling, the outdoors and skiing. We now have a little girl and continue to enjoy these things with her and can’t wait to get her on skis too!

When your pet has reached the end of their life and another day only means another 24 hours of indignity and pain, sometimes a peaceful end is the last great act you can do for them. At Cloud 9 Vets we are animal lovers ourselves, and we know what a deeply personal and heart-wrenching decision it can be to even consider pet euthanasia. It’s for this reason that every time we’re called to talk about putting a dog down or putting a cat to sleep, we will come and visit you – and your pet – in person.

This personal visit, which happens in the comfort and safety of your own home, lets us make sure that there really is no other option than pet euthanasia. Every aspect of your pet’s health will be considered, and the ways in which we can ease the procedure for both you and them will be discussed. Having your pet put to sleep in your own home lets them do without any of the stress or worries that the cold steel tables of your local veterinary clinic can provoke Here, they can be surrounded by your love and their own bed or sofa, and the things around which they feel most comfortable. Contact us and speak about the practicalities of the process or the cost of putting a dog to sleep or cat euthanasia costs at any time. We are always glad to lend an understanding ear, and can be counted on to talk you through the process, the anaesthetics involved, or dog euthanasia costs. Whatever you need, we’re here to provide it.
